Tech workflow costs in an easy to understand example

A simple descision to purchase a paper cutter gave a client (The Masquerade) all of this technology... how & why is at the bottom

  • Merge print, website data, & in house TV systems into one source eliminating errors across different advertising mediums.
  • Custom calender system for the complex booking of touring acts that allowed for 600 national shows a year to be booked from over 4000+ opportunities without scheduling collisions.
  • Handled a 20k person email list and sent 40k emails per week from IN HOUSE systems I built. I had the same acceptance rate from major email providers like Yahoo, Gmail, & MSN as Constant Contact & Mail Chimp. This system also provided open rates.
  • Created systems to build custom emails from website database based on users interests and send quickly. Customized subject lines based on user interest greatly increased open rates and presales.
  • Set up direct presale of tickets to the public through paypal that netted 20k the first year while saving Masquerade concert goers 60k+ in excessive fees from Ticketmaster.
  • Web site that merged PHP and .NET technologies to deliver content for 60k unique visitors per month very reliably.
  • Started intern program lure in high quality help to the Masquerade by using the venue's notoriety for booking number one music artists

I often look at that list and still wonder how I EVER did it and what was the key turning point that let to it and realized it was that paper cutter. How & why... When I first started at Masquerade I designed the fliers to promote upcoming events and in the late afternoon printed the fliers on a xerox machine and cut them. At the time they had a paper cutter that would handle 10 sheets of paper at a time. It was taking me around 30-45 minutes to do the cuts an average of 3 days a week. I requested a rather expensive (for a concert venue/nightclub) high quality 250 sheet at a time paper cutter that I figured would cut that work to 10 minutes per week. The extra time gained by that one workflow gave me the time to improve the next workflow that led to a domino and compound interest effect in mostly technology and software workflows that resulted in that list.
